Microporous Precipitated Silica for Synthetic Paper Applications
Synthetic paper, a print material made from plastic rather than wood pulp, is commonly used in applications where the ability to perform in demanding environments is paramount.
Created and commercialized by PPG, our PPG TESLIN® substrate is a proprietary synthetic paper based on our high-performance, high-quality microporous precipitated silicas. The precipitated silica is aggregated in a matrix with polyolefin, a thermoplastic polymer, to produce a smooth, yet highly porous printable surface that unites the absorptive capacity and flexibility of precipitated silica with the water- and chemical-resistance of plastic. The result is a proprietary substrate that is uniquely equipped to meet the specialized challenges of end users.
As a constituent in synthetic paper, the silica-polyolefin matrix enables Teslin substrate to offer four primary performance benefits: durability, printability, security and bonding strength. The material also has the exclusive capability among synthetic substrates to quickly absorb and lock in inks, laminating films and adhesives and to remain lightweight, flexible and thermally stable.
